Recipe: Restore a VM with Secure Restore
Expected deliverables:
A restored VMware virtual machine in the same location and checked for malware before bringing back to the production environment.
Time to complete: 10 minutes
Ingredients:
- At least one Restore Point of the virtual machines to be recovered.
Before you start:
With this procedure you will overwrite the status of exisiting virtual machines if they are still present the source environment.
Assumptions:
You have a Veeam Backup and Replication server installed.
The vSphere infrastructure have been added to the backup infrastructure and properly configured.
Method:
- Open the Veeam Backup & Replication Console and select Home on the bottom left menu.
- Click Restore and select VMware vSphere > Restore from backup > Entire VM restore > Entire VM restore
- In the Virtual Machines step:
- Click in Add -> From backup… to open the selection of available backups. Choose the desired VM from one of the backups and click Add.
- In the Virtual machines to restore list, select a VM and click in Point, then select a restore point from which you want to restore the VM and click OK. Click Next.
- In the Restore Mode step, select Restore to the original location and click Next. In the Secure Restore you can instruct Veeam Backup & Replication to scan machine data for malware activity before restoration. Choose between the following options:
- either Scan restore points with Veeam Threat Hunter (if Veeam Threat Hunter is configured) or Scan restore points with your existing antivirus software
- Scan the restore point with the following YARA rule to use YARA as a scan engine Choose between Proceed to recovery but disable VM network adapters and Abort VM recovery if scan finds a virus threat, then click Next.
- In the Reason step, enter a reason for performing the Instant Recovery and click Next.
- Choose if the target VMs should be powered on, and then click Finish.
