The Veeam Cookbook Series

A simple step by step no frills approach to achieving your goal

Recipe: Performing Instant Recovery of Workloads to Hyper-V

Expected deliverables:

A VM started in a Microsoft Hyper-V environment directly from a Veeam backup with Instant Recovery.

Time to complete: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • A Hyper-V infrastructure added to the backup infrastructure.
  • At least one Restore Point of the virtual machines to be recovered.
  • Make sure that the Disable changed block tracking for this host option is not selected for a host to which you plan to restore a workload.

Before you start:
Be aware of potential IP Address or MAC Address conflict when restoring the VM to the original location with original settings.

Assumptions:
You have a Veeam Backup and Replication server installed.

Method:

  1. Open the Veeam Backup Console and select Home on the bottom left menu.
  2. Select Backups in the inventory pane, expand the necessary backup job, right-click the VM you want to restore and select Instant recovery > Microsoft Hyper-V.
  3. At the Machines step, you can choose to restore multiple Workloads at a time. To do that, click Add -> From backup…. Choose the desired VMs from the backups and click Add.
    • Select a restore point for every VM to be recovered or keep the default.
    • Click Next.
  4. At the Restore Mode step, specify a destination for VM recovery and click Next.
  5. At the Host step, specify hosts or clusters where you want to locate the recovered VMs, by selecting the VM and clicking in Host.
  6. At the Datastore step, specify the location (folder) where VM configuration files and disks will be stored, by selecting the VM and clicking in Path.
  7. At the Network step, configure a network mapping table, by selecting the necessary VMs and clicking Network.
  8. At the Name step you can change the name of each restored VM and select whether you want to preserve its UUID or change it.
  9. In the Helper Appliance step click in Configure and in the Network Settings windows:
    • Select a network for the helper appliance by clicking Browse
    • Click Configure and set the IPv4 or IPv6 address, and the DNS server.
    • Click OK and Next
  10. In the Secure Restore step, you can enable Veeam to scan machine data for malware activity before restoring the machine to the production environment. Click Next.
  11. In the Reason step, enter a reason for performing the Instant Recovery and click Next..
  12. In the Summary step, choose if the target VMs should be powered on and connected to the network, and then click Finish.

Important: After the VMs have been successfully recovered, you must finalize the process. For this, test the recovered VMs and decide whether to migrate them to production environment or stop publishing
