Recipe: Restore an Entire Proxmox VE VM to a new location

Expected deliverables:

An entire Proxmox VE Virtual Machine restored from a Veeam Backup to a new location or with different settings.

Time to complete: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • A Proxmox VE server added to the backup infrastructure.
  • You need the VM has at least one successfully created restore point.
  • A target Proxmox VE server, storage and network for the restored VM.

Assumptions:
You have a Veeam Backup and Replication server installed.

Method:

  1. Open the Veeam Backup & Replication Console and select Home on the bottom left menu.
  2. Select Backups in the inventory pane, expand the necessary backup job, right-click the VM you want to restore and select Restore entire VM > Proxmox VE.
  3. In the Virtual Machines step, the selected VM is listed.
    • If you want to add more VMs to be recovered concurrently, click in Add -> From backup… to open the selection of available backups. Choose the desired VM from one of the backups and click Add.
    • In the Virtual machines to restore list, select a VM and click in Point, to select a restore point (by default Veeam uses the latest valid restore point) and click OK. Click Next.
  4. In the Restore Mode step, select Restore to a new location, or with different settings and click Next.
  5. In the Host step, select the target Proxmox VE server. Click Next.
  6. In the Storage step, select the target storage for the restored VM disks. Click Next.
  7. In the Name step, specify a new name for the restored VM if required. Click Next.
  8. In the Network step, map the source network to a network in the target location, or select to disconnect the VM from the network. Click Next.
  9. In the Reason step, enter a reason for performing the restore and click Next.
  10. In the Summary step, select Power on target VM after restoring if required, review the details and click Finish.
