Recipe: Instant Recovery to VMware vSphere

Expected deliverables:

A VM started in a VMware vSphere environment directly from a Veeam backup with Instant Recovery.

Time to complete: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

Before you start:
Be aware of potential IP Address or MAC Address conflict when restoring the VM to the original location with original settings.

Assumptions:
You have a Veeam Backup and Replication server installed.

Method:

  1. Open the Veeam Backup Console and select Home on the bottom left menu.
  2. Select Backups in the inventory pane, expand the necessary backup job, right-click the VM you want to restore and select Instant recovery > VMware vSphere.
  3. At the Machines step, you can choose to restore multiple Workloads at a time. To do that, click Add -> From backup…. Choose the desired VMs from the backups and click Add.
    • Select a restore point for every VM to be recovered or keep the default.
    • Click Next.
  4. At the Restore Mode step, specify a destination for VM recovery and click Next.
  5. In the Destination step, specify the restored VM name, target host, resource pool, datastore, folder and network for the restored VM
  6. In the Datastore step, as an option the Redirect write cache can be enabled, and then click in Choose to select a Datastore from the list. Click Next
  7. In the Helper Appliance step, if required, click in Configure and in the Network Settings windows:
    • Select a network for the helper appliance by clicking Browse
    • Click Configure and set the IPv4 or IPv6 address, and the DNS server.
    • Click OK and Next
  8. In the Secure Restore step, you can enable Veeam to scan machine data for malware activity before restoring the machine to the production environment. Click Next.
  9. In the Reason step, enter a reason for performing the Instant Recovery and click Next..
  10. In the Summary step, choose if the target VMs should be powered on and connected to the network, and then click Finish.

Important: After the VMs have been successfully recovered, you must finalize the process. For this, test the recovered VMs and decide whether to migrate them to production environment or stop publishing
