Recipe: Create an Agent Backup Job for Linux Servers

Expected deliverables:

An Agent Backup Job to backup Linux servers using Veeam Agents, where the Job will be fully managed by Veeam Backup & Replication.

Ingredients:

Assumptions:

It’s assumed that you already have a Veeam Backup Server fully working in your environment.

Method:

  1. On the Home tab, click Backup Job > Linux computer
  2. At the Job Mode step:
    • In the Type field, select the type of protected computers whose data you want to back up with Veeam Agents. Select Server.
    • Select Managed by backup server as the the job mode.
  3. At the Name step, specify a job name and description. Click Next.
  4. At the Computers step, select protection groups whose data you want to back up. Click Add > Protection group, then in the Select Object window select the required Protection Group(s) click Ok. Click Next.
  5. At the Backup Mode step, select the mode in which you want to create a backup. It could be Entire computer, Volume level backup or File level backup.
    • If you have selected the Volume level backup option, at the Objects step you must specify the backup scope — define what volumes you want to include in the backup.
    • If you have selected the File level backup option, at the Objects step you must specify the backup scope — define what folders with files or entire volumes you want to include in the backup.
  6. At the Storage step, from the Backup repository list, select a backup repository where you want to store Veeam Agent backups
    • In the Retention Policy field, specify retention policy settings whether based in Days or Restore Points.
    • If you want to enable GFS for Long-Term retention, then select the Keep some periodic full backups longer for archival purposes check box and configure GFS options.
    • By default Backup mode is Incremental with weekly Synthetic full backup. If you want a different backup mode, click in Advanced Settings and use the desired settings.
  7. At the Guest Processing step, if it’s required, you can check the Enable application-aware processing option. If it required, you need to provide Pre-freeze and Post-thaw scripts.
    • Click Applications, select a Protection Group for which you want to configure scripts and then click Edit.
    • Click the Scripts tab and select Require successful script execution.
    • In the Linux scripts section, specify paths to scripts for Linux VMs (Pre-freeze and Post-thaw scripts). Click OK twice.
  8. At the Schedule step, specify the schedule according to which you want to perform backup. Click Apply.
  9. At the Summary step , review details of the backup job. If you want to start the job right after you close the wizard, select the Run the job when I click Finish check box, otherwise leave the check box unselected. Then click Finish to close the wizard
