The Veeam Cookbook Series

A simple step by step no frills approach to achieving your goal

Recipe: Restore and Entire VM in Hyper-V to a new location

Expected deliverables:

An entire Virtual Machine restored in Hyper-V from a Veeam Backup to a new location.

Time to complete: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • Hyper-V Virtual infrastructure must have been added to the backup infrastructure and properly configured. That means adding Hyper-V clusters (recommended) or standalone Hyper-V hosts.
  • You need the VM has at least one successfully created restore point.
  • The restored VM will have the same MAC address as the original VM. Therefore, if you restore the VM to the same Hyper-V host where the original VM is running, a MAC address conflict may occur. To overcome this situation, power off the original VM before you start the restore process.
  • The Hyper-V role must be enabled on target hosts.

Before you start:

The version of the target host on which the VM is restored must be the same or later than the version of the source host where the original VM was registered

Assumptions:

It’s assumed that you already have a Veeam Backup Server fully working in your environment.

Method:

  1. On the Home tab, click Restore > Microsoft Hyper-V > Restore from backup > Entire VM restore > Entire VM restore.
  2. At the Virtual Machines step, select one or more VMs you want to restore.
    • Click Add, then select where to browse for VMs and VM containers, whether From infrastructure or From Backup.
    • Select the VMs you want to restore and click Add.
    • If you want to select a specific restore point(by default Veeam uses the latest valid restore point), then in the “Virtual machines to restore” list, select the VM and click Point, then in the Restore Points window, select the required restore point.
  3. At the Restore Mode step select “Restore to a new location, or with different settings”.
  4. At the Host step, specify hosts or clusters where the recovered VMs will be registered. To do this, select the necessary VMs, click Host and select a host or cluster.
  5. At the Datastore step, specify the location (folder) where you want restore the VM files.
  6. At the Network step create a network mapping table. In the Network connections list, select the necessary VMs and click Network. In the list of available networks, select a network to which the restored VMs will be connected.
  7. At the Name step you can change the name of each restored VM and select whether you want to preserve its UUID or change it.
  8. At the Secure Restore step, if required you can enable the “Scan the restored machine for malware prior to performing the recovery” check box.
  9. At the Reason step of the wizard, enter a reason for restoring the selected VMs.
  10. At the Summary step of the wizard, check the specified settings. If you want to start the restored VM on the target host, select the Power on VM after restoring check box.
