  • Server (Virtual or Physical) with 8 Cores, 16GB Ram, C: drive with 50GB free space, D: drive with at least enough space to cover your backup needs.
  • Windows Server Operating system, at least server Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2. We highly recommend to use the most recent supported version of Microsoft Windows. For VBR V12, the latest version supported is Microsoft Windows Server 2022.
  • A physical or virtual machine with a PostgreSQL instance and make sure the instance contains the default postgres database.
  • PostgreSQL 14.x and PostgreSQL 15.x are supported, but we strongly recommend to use the latest PostgreSQL 15.x version.
  • Local Administrative account access on your server.
  • Veeam Backup & Replication zip file downloaded and on your target machine (always use the most recent form the Veeam website, it will contain all the latest patching and updates).
  • For paid versions please have your license file located within easy reach on the server you will be installing Veeam onto.

Before you start:
Veeam Backup & Replication does not support PostgreSQL installations on cloud database services (for example, Amazon Relational Database Service - RDS)

Assumptions: You already have the external PostgreSQL instance installed and reachable.

Method:

  1. Right click the iso image and select mount.
  2. Explore the mounted as a DVD image in file manager, find and run the setup application in the root of the drive.
  3. In the main popup window click in the Install option.
  4. At the next step, select Install Veeam Backup & Replication.
  5. Read the Licence Agreement and click in I Accept accept the agreement and continue with the installation.
  6. Browse to your licence file and add, select next. As an option, select the Update license automatically check box to install new licenses automatically when you renew or expand your contract.
  7. On System Configuration Check page, a reboot may be required depending on your OS. Click on Reboot if required. Please note that if all required software is already installed on the machine, the System Configuration Check step will be skipped entirely.
  8. On the Ready to Install page, click in Customize Settings
  9. There will be additional steps, such as Service Account, Configuration Check, Port Configuration and Data Locations, that can be skipped for this recipe unless you have a good reason to change anything.
  10. At the Database step, select PostgreSQL as database engine
    • Click on Use existing instance and provide the Hostname and Port for the PostgreSQL server in a HOSTNAME:PORT format, and the Database name.
    • Provide proper authentication method, whether using Windows Authentication or Native PostgreSQL authentication.
    • Click Next to continue.
  11. At the Ready to Install page, review the information, then click on Install to proceed with the installation.
  12. After a wait for the software to complete, it is now ready for use and your icons are on your desktop.
