A simple step by step no frills approach to achieving your goal

Recipe: Restore with IVMR in a different location

Expected deliverables:

A restored VMware virtual machine with Instant Recovery in a new location or with a new name.

Time to complete: 8 minutes

Ingredients:

  • At least one Restore Point of the virtual machines to be recovered.

Assumptions: It’s assumed that you already have a Veeam Backup Server fully working in your environment. The vSphere infrastructure have been added to the backup infrastructure and properly configured.

Method:

  1. Open the Veeam Backup & Replication Console and select Home on the bottom left menu.
  2. Click Restore and select VMware vSphere > Restore from backup > Entire VM restore > Instant recovery > Instant recovery to VMware vSphere
  3. Select Add -> From backup… to open the selection of available backups. Choose the desired VM from one of the backups and click Add. Click Next.
  4. Select Restore to a new location, or with different settings and click Next.
  5. In the Destination step:
    • In the Restored VM name field, specify a name for the recovered workload.
    • Click Choose next to Host and select the target Host for the restore process. The host can be in different VMware cluster or datacenter. Click OK.
    • Click Choose next to Folder and specify a folder to which the recovered VM files will be placed. Click OK.
    • Click Choose next to Resource Pool and choose a specific Restore Pool if needed. Click OK and then click in Next
    • When restoring workloads othere than vSphere VMs, in the Network section configure the network mapping table to assign a vSphere network to the recovered workload.
  6. In the Datastore step, as an option the Redirect write cache can be enabled, and then click in Choose to select a Datastore from the list. Click Next
  7. In the Helper Appliance step click in Configure and in the Network Settings windows:
    • Select a network for the helper appliance by clicking Browse
    • Click Configure and set the IPv4 or IPv6 address, and the DNS server.
    • Click OK and Next
  8. In the Secure Restore keep the Scan machine for virus threats prior performing recovery option disabled and click in Next.
  9. In the Reason step, enter a reason for performing the Intant Recovery.
  10. Choose if the target VMs should be powered on and connected to the network, and then click Finish.

Important: After the VMs have been successfully recovered, you must finalize the process. For this, test the recovered VMs and decide whether to migrate them to production environment or stop publishing
