Recipe: Adding S3 Compatible Object Storage

Expected deliverables:

A new S3 Compatible Object Storage added to Veeam Inventory which can be used as source in an Unstructured Data Backup Jobs.

Time to complete: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • A General-Purpose Proxy Server already available in Veeam Infrastructure
  • A Windows Server or Linux Server to be used as a Cached Repository located as close to the NAS filer as possible.
  • A S3 compatible storage provided either by a on-premises solution or a cloud solution.
  • The S3-compatible object storage device must be fully compatible with the AWS S3 operations and AWS S3 Signature Version 4 standard.

Before you start:

Assumptions:

It’s assumed that you already have a Veeam Backup Server fully working in your environment.

Method:

  1. Open the Inventory view. In the inventory pane, right-click the Unstructured Data node and select Add unstructured data source.
  2. In the Add Unstructured Data Source window, click Object storage > S3 Compatible.
  3. At the Account step, specify:
    • A Friendly name you want to assign to your object storage in Veeam console.
    • The Service Point address of the object storage
    • The Region for the object storage
    • And then select Cloud Credentials from the Credentials drop-down list or click in Add to create new ones.
  4. At the Processing step:
    • Click Choose next to the Backup proxy field to select a backup proxy (Default: All proxies)
    • From the Cache repository drop-down list, select a cache repository where temporary cache files must be stored.
    • Use the Backup I/O control slider to define how fast the backup proxy can read data from the source object storage or leave the default.
  5. At the Apply step, wait until Veeam installs and configures all required components. Click Next.
  6. At the Summary step, review details of the added Object Storage and click Finish to exit the wizard.
