Recipe: Perform a Failback from a replicated VM with CDP to the original VM in Production

Expected deliverables:

Running a Failback of a Virtual Machine replicated with a Veeam Replication Job to move all processes back from the replica VM in the disaster recovery site to the original VM in the production site.

Time to complete: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

• Virtual Machine to be recovered must have been replicated with a Veeam CDP Policy successfully at least once.
• CDP replicas must be in the Failover state.

Before you start:

The production Cluster or Host must have enough processing resources to power on the original VM back in production.

Assumptions:

It’s assumed that you already have performed a Failover of the replicated VM.

Method:

1. Open the Veeam Backup & Replication Console.
2. On the Home tab, click Restore > VMware vSphere > Restore from replica > Entire replica > Failback to production.
3. At the Replica step, select CDP replicas from which you want to fail back. Click Next.
4. At the Destination step, select Failback to the original VM. To select which backup proxies will be used for data transfer, click Pick backup proxies for data transfer. By default, Veeam selects proxies automatically.
5. At the Failback Mode step, specify when switch from replicas to production VMs must be performed, either Auto (default), Scheduled or Manual. Click Next
6. At the Summary step, review the configured failback settings and click Finish. If you want to power on the production VMs right after the switch to production operation is performed, select the Power on target VM after restoring check box

Important: Failback is an intermediate step that needs to be finalized. You can finalize failback in the following way:

• Commit Failback
• Undo Failback
