Recipe: Restore a VM with Secure Restore

Expected deliverables:

A restored VMware virtual machine in the same location and checked for malware before bringing back to the production environment.

Time to complete: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • At least one Restore Point of the virtual machines to be recovered.

Before you start:

With this procedure you will overwrite the status of exisiting virtual machines if they are still present the source environment.

Assumptions:

You have a fully working Veeam Backup Server in your environment with a vSphere Infrastructure attached.

Method:

  1. Open the Veeam Backup & Replication Console and select Home on the bottom left menu.
  2. Click Restore and select VMware vSphere > Restore from backup > Entire VM restore > Entire VM restore
  3. In the Virtual Machines step:
    • Click in Add -> From backup… to open the selection of available backups. Choose the desired VM from one of the backups and click Add.
    • In the Virtual machines to restore list, select a VM and click in Point, then select a restore point from which you want to restore the VM and click OK. Click Next.
  4. In the Restore Mode step, select Restore to the original location and click Next.
  5. In the Secure Restore step:
    • Enable the Scan machine for virus threats prior performing recovery option. This is available only for MS Windows VMs.
    • Leave the option Proceed with recovery but disable network adapters enabled and select the checkbox to Scan the entire image. Click Next
  6. In the Reason step, enter a reason for performing the Intant Recovery and click Next.
  7. Choose if the target VMs should be powered on, and then click Finish.
