A simple step by step no frills approach to achieving your goal

Recipe: Adding a New Tape GFS Media Pool

Expected deliverables:

A new Standard Tape GFS Media Pool to store data to tape according to the GFS, or Grandfather-Father-Son rotation scheme.

Time to complete: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • A Tape Server already configured in Veeam Backup & Replication
  • At least one Tape Server with a Library or drive added to Veeam Backup & Replication

Before you start: Do not mix standard and WORM tapes in one media pool. For using WORM tapes, you need to create separate media pools, please check the Adding a New WORM GFS Media Pool recipe.

Assumptions: You have a Veeam Backup and Replication server installed.

Method:

  1. Open the Veeam Backup & Replication console and select Tape Infrastructure from the bottom left menu.
  2. Select the top of the Tape Infrastructure tree. From the top menu choose Add GFS Media Pool > Standard.
  3. Give the new Media Pool a name and description and click Next.
  4. In the Tapes step:
    • From the list in the Tape library field, select the tape device that you want to use in this media pool.
    • To allocate specific tapes from the library, click the Add in the Tapes field and select tapes that should be added to the media pool.
    • To make the media pool replenishable, select the **Add tapes from Free media pool automatically when more tapes are required check box.
  5. At the GFS Media Set step of the wizard, you can set the data retention period for every backup cycle: daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly. Click Next
  6. At the Options step:
    • Activate the Enable parallel processing for tape jobs using this media pool checkbox and define the number of drives to be used.
    • If desired enable Use encryption and select a password or define a new one by selecting Add…. Click Apply.
  7. See the summary and select Finish to close the wizard.
  8. On the left side the new Media Pool is now visible in the Tape Infrastructure tree and can be used for Backup to Tape Jobs or File to Tape Jobs.
