The Veeam Cookbook Series

A simple step by step no frills approach to achieving your goal

Recipe: Performing Instant Recovery of Workloads to Hyper-V VMs in a new location

Expected deliverables:

An entire Virtual Machine restored in Hyper-V, in a new location, from a Veeam Backup in a matter of seconds using Instant Recovery.

Time to complete: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • Hyper-V Virtual infrastructure must have been added to the backup infrastructure and properly configured.
  • You need the VM has at least one successfully created restore point.
  • Make sure that the Disable changed block tracking for this host option is not selected for a host to which you plan to restore a workload.
  • If you restore a workload to the production network, make sure that the original workload is powered off to avoid conflicts.
  • The restored VM will have the same MAC address as the original VM. Therefore, if you restore the VM to the same Hyper-V host where the original VM is running, a MAC address conflict may occur. To overcome this situation, power off the original VM before you start the restore process.

Assumptions: It’s assumed that you already have a Veeam Backup Server fully working in your environment.

Method:

  1. Open the Veeam Backup & Replication Console and select Home on the bottom left menu.
  2. Click Restore and select Microsoft Hyper-V > Restore from backup > Entire VM restore > Instant recovery > Instant Recovery to Microsoft Hyper-V
  3. At the Machines step, select one or more VMs you want to recover.
    • Click Add, then select where to browse for VMs and VM containers, whether From infrastructure or From Backup.
    • Select the VMs you want to restore and click Add.
    • If you want to select a specific restore point(by default Veeam uses the latest valid restore point), then in the Virtual machines to restore list, select the VM and click Point, then in the Restore Points window, select the required restore point.
  4. At the Recovery Mode step select Restore to a new location, or with different settings and click Next.
  5. At the Host step, specify hosts or clusters where the recovered VMs will be registered. To do this, select the necessary VMs, click Host and select a host or cluster.
  6. At the Datastore step, specify the location (folder) where you want restore the VM files by clicking in Path.
  7. At the Network step, in the Network connections list, select the necessary VMs and click Network. In the list of available networks, select a network to which the restored VMs will be connected.
  8. At the Name step you can change the name of each restored VM and select whether you want to preserve its UUID or change it.
  9. In the Helper Appliance step click in Configure and in the Network Settings windows:
    • Select a network for the helper appliance by clicking Browse
    • Click Configure and set the IPv4 or IPv6 address, and the DNS server.
    • Click OK and Next
  10. In the Secure Restore keep the Scan machine for virus threats prior performing recovery option disabled and click in Next.
  11. In the Reason step, enter a reason for performing the Intant Recovery.
  12. Choose if the target VMs should be powered on and connected to the network, and then click Finish.

Important: After the VMs have been successfully recovered, you must finalize the process. For this, test the recovered VMs and decide whether to migrate them to production environment or stop publishing
